ac97 soundchip and drivers

Ca4299 worked on two P3 notebooks with it recently. He wrote that he'll try to do it so maybe it'll became a reality. In Win98 everything works just fine but when I try to play DOS games I've got sound issues, sometimes there's no sound at all, sometimes got sound only partially And communism is flat-out bad. Every time I remove the device and restart, Windows finds it again and automatically assigns this driver to it again. There are probably hundreds of models that fit this mold so I want to target what people consider the best, most compatible, sturdy etc.
